OXFORD, Ohio – Leading their teams on the mound and at the plate, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of April 29-May 5 are sophomore pitcher Megan Mattera on the women’s side and freshman outfielder Jake Romano for the men.

Mattera (Lake Zurich, Ill.) was very strong in the circle this past week for the softball team. While she didn’t record any decisions in her four appearances, she had a 0.64 ERA, allowing only one earned run in 11.0 innings pitched. She struck out six in her four outings. Her best performance of the week came in a start against Kent State on Friday when she allowed no earned runs on only three hits in 5.2 innings of work. Mattera also had relief appearances against Wright State and in both games against Buffalo. Opponents hit only .179 against her during the week.

The honor is the first of Mattera’s career while she is the third softball player to claim Miami Female Athlete of the Week this year, along with Kayla Ledbetter (twice) and Tiyona Marshall.

Romano (Algonquin, Ill.) extended his hitting streak to a season-long nine games with multiple hits in all five contests last week. He batted .478 (11-of-23) on the week and tied his season best with three hits in a win over Cincinnati on Wednesday. Romano had two hits in each of the other four games, giving him 14 multiple-hit games this year. He scored seven runs in the five games and had four RBIs. In addition to his strong defense, one of his hits was a double while he also walked once. Romano was perfect in 14 fielding chances last week and now leads the team with a .385 batting average.

The Miami Male Athlete of the Week accolade is the first of Romano’s career while he is the fifth different RedHawk baseball player to claim the award this year.

Mattera and the softball team are back in action Wednesday as the RedHawks begin postseason play at the Mid-American Conference Tournament in Akron. Miami Softball opens against eighth-seeded Toledo at 11 a.m. and will at least play again Thursday in the double-elimination tournament that runs through Saturday. Romano and the baseball team return home this weekend to host Buffalo in a three-game MAC series from Friday to Sunday with Friday’s opener set for 6 p.m. at McKie Field.
