AKRON, Ohio – Miami and Northern Illinois battled in a great pitcher’s duel in the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday, but a run in the bottom of the seventh led the Huskies to a 2-1 victory. Miami falls to 20-33 overall, while NIU improves to 25-29.

The fifth-seeded RedHawks will now take on sixth-seeded Ohio in an elimination game on Thursday beginning at 11 a.m.

Miami scored its run in the top of the third inning. Kristy Arbour led off with an infield single to the shortstop. A Taylor Shuey groundout moved her up to second. One batter later, Hailey Reed doubled to deep left field, allowing Arbour to score. NIU’s Emily Norton settled down from there, keeping the ‘Hawks off the board the rest of the game.

Northern Illinois tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run off RedHawk starter Paige Myers. Myers finished the game allowing one run on five hits. Megan Mattera came in to relieve her beginning with the bottom of the fifth.

With the score still tied at one in the bottom of the seventh, a single and an error put runners on first and second with no one out. Amanda Sheppard followed with a single to right center, which brought the winning run home.

Reed finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Arbour, Tiyona Marshall, Jenna Modic and Shanyn McIntyre each had hits for Miami.
