NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On day one of the Black and Gold Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt University Friday evening, six members of the Miami University women’s track and field team competed with sophomore distance runner Melissa Girgis and redshirt senior thrower Samantha Gable highlighting the three events in which the RedHawks competed.
Girgis (Worthington, Ohio) placed eighth in the 3000m invitational run in 9:49.30, which is an outdoor personal best and ranks her sixth in school history. She finished behind three runners from Michigan and a trio of women from Vanderbilt, as well as a Bradley runner.
In the hammer throw, Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) captured fifth with a heave of 49.86m/163-7, as she finished behind a pair of Southern Illinois throwers and two throwers from Louisville. Sophomore Adaora Anunike (Galena, Ohio) was 15th in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 44.60m/146-4. Gable also took 12th in the shot put with a mark of 13.41m/44-0 while Anunike was again 15th (13.29m/43-7.25).
The meet resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. ET with the discus while the track heats up at noon ET beginning with the 3000m run. The 4x400m relay concludes the meet at 6:15 p.m. ET. Live results for Saturday’s action can be found here.
