OXFORD, Ohio - After performing well in a pair of games for their respective basketball teams, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of March 4-10 are junior forward Jon Harris on the men's side and senior guard Courtney Osborn for the women.
Harris (Twinsburg, Ohio) led Miami on the road against the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference last week. For the week, he averaged 17.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from 3-point range. He accounted for nearly 72 percent of the RedHawks' 3-pointers for the week. Harris led all players at Akron Tuesday with a career-high 21 points. He was 8-of-12 (.667) from the field, including 4-of-6 (.667) from 3-point range. He also had six rebounds, one steal and one assist against the Zips. At Ohio on Saturday, Harris tallied 13 points off 6-of-11 shooting (.545) and added a career-high nine rebounds to go along with three assists and a steal.
The Miami Male Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Harris' career. He is the fifth different member of Miami's men's basketball team to claim the accolade this season.
Osborn (Fishers, Ind.) was strong in two victories over Ohio last week. She led the RedHawks to a gritty, 66-61 victory at Ohio on Wednesday. She led the team with 21 points and also contributed six assists and three steals in 39 minutes of action. Osborn hit three 3-point baskets, including the go-ahead trey in the closing minutes. It was her 12th 20-point effort of the season. She followed that up with an incredible season-high 39-point performance in an 83-61 victory over the Bobcats in the MAC Tournament First Round on Saturday. She was 12-for-17 from the field, including 7-for-9 from behind the arc. The seven 3-pointers tied a career-high. She was also 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The 39 points were her second highest total ever and fourth highest in school history. For the week she averaged 30.0 points per game, 4.5 assists per game, 3.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game. She was 10-for-14 from 3-point land in the two games against Ohio and a combined 14-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Osborn has now captured Miami Female Athlete of the Week four times this season and eight times in her career. She was named First-Team All-MAC on Friday, as well.
Both Harris and Osborn lead their teams into MAC Tournament action this week in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena. After Harris paced the RedHawks with 14 points in a first-round win at Bowling Green Monday, Miami's men take on seventh-seeded Eastern Michigan in the second round Wednesday at 9 p.m. Osborn and the women's team resume tournament play Wednesday as well, facing off against seventh-seeded Buffalo in the second round at 2:30 p.m. Should either or both teams advance, they would play again Thursday in Cleveland in the quarterfinals with both MAC Tournaments running through Saturday.
