OXFORD, Ohio - After big performances to lead their basketball teams to wins over the weekend, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Dec. 17-23 are senior guard Courtney Osborn of women's basketball and sophomore guard Will Sullivan of men's basketball.
Osborn (Fishers, Ind.)
had a fantastic performance at the Caribbean Classic in Mexico over the
weekend, averaging 20 points and 5.5 assists in the two games. For the fifth
time in her career, she had a 30-or-more point performance with 30 points in a 62-49
win over Nevada Saturday, as she scored nearly half of the team's points. In
that game she was 11-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point
range. Osborn had five assists, three steals, two blocks and two rebounds in
the win against the Wolfpack, as well. In the first game of the tournament
Friday, she was also solid against a very good Creighton team with 10 points
and six assists. She hit 5-of-6 free throws while also pulling down two
rebounds and blocking a shot. Osborn finished with three blocks in the
tournament to go along with four rebounds.
Osborn's honor is her second of the season and sixth of her career, after claiming Miami Female Athlete of the Week four times as a junior. On Monday, she was also tabbed MAC Co-East Division Player of the Week for her efforts for the second time this year and sixth time as a RedHawk.
Sullivan
(Elmhurst, Ill.) shot a scorching 87.5 percent from the field for the week,
including 80.0 percent from 3-point range. He missed just one field goal from
the floor in Miami's two games last week, a 3-point attempt at Wright State. The
6-foot-3 Sullivan played the fourth guard spot Saturday in an 82-70 win over
UIC and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including 3-for-3 from long
range to lead all players with a career-high 16 points, which doubled his
previous career high. He added two assists, two steals and two rebounds in 29
minutes of action against the Flames. At Wright State Wednesday, Sullivan
earned his first start of the season and was a spark plug or the RedHawks. He
hit a key 3-pointer and was fouled on a field goal in the first half to keep
the RedHawks within striking distance. He also amassed three steals against the
Raiders. For the week, Sullivan averaged 10.5 points per game and 2.5 steals
per game.
The Miami Male Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Sullivan's career.
Osborn and the women's basketball team return to the court Saturday, Jan. 5 at Duquesne. Sullivan leads the men's basketball team back into action Sunday, Dec. 30 against Wilmington College in Millett Hall at 3 p.m.
