OXFORD, Ohio-The weekend of Sept. 21-22 will be an exciting one in Oxford. In addition to Homecoming Weekend, Miami University Athletics also will host a Cradle of Coaches Celebration Weekend, which features a variety of events.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the Cradle of Coaches Dinner on Friday, Sept. 21. The event will honor Paul Brown, who will have a statue unveiled in the Cradle of Coaches Plaza Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. and the induction of Randy Ayers '78, Thad Matta, Joe Novak '67, Sandy Pearsall and Sue Ramsey '78 into the Cradle of Coaches Association. (Complete Cradle of Coaches Association Release) The dinner is $40 per person and includes a cocktail hour, which begins at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner following at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Throughout the sports world, Miami University has the unique reputation as the "Cradle of Coaches." Bob Kurz, a 1958 graduate of Miami and former Miami Sports Information Director, and his wife, Marian, provided a gift to the University to construct the Cradle of Coaches Plaza beyond the South End Zone of Yager Stadium. The family of Thomas P. Van Voorhis, a former coach, physical education instructor and athletic administrator from 1921-1956 who taught many of the Cradle members in the classroom, provided a gift to create nine heroic-scale sculptures to recognize Van Voorhis and honor the eight Miami graduates who have earned recognition as national collegiate or professional football coaches of the year and/or been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The list includes Earl "Red" Blaik, Weeb Ewbank, Paul Brown, Paul Dietzel, Ara Parseghian, John Pont, Bo Schembechler and Carm Cozza.

The Cradle of Coaches Association was established in 1971 to acknowledge the role Miamians have played in establishing Miami University as the Cradle of Coaches. While all Miami Alumni who go on to coach or those who have coached at Miami are considered a part of the Cradle of Coaches, the Cradle of Coaches Association began inducting individuals into the Association in 1992 to further recognize their accomplishments. In 1999 and 2000, Miami's Hall of Fame Committee further developed criteria for induction into the Cradle of Coaches to be more inclusive of all sports.

Three Miami Athletics programs also will be hosting alumni weekends Sept. 21-22. Football is hosting their alumni and will honor the 1947 Sun Bowl champions, 1957 MAC champions and 2007 MAC East Division champions during the Miami vs. Massachusetts football game, which kicks off at noon on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Men's Basketball is hosting its annual Jamie Mercurio Skin-the-Hawk Classic Golf Outing on Friday, Sept. 21 at Hueston Woods Golf Course. Contact the Men's Basketball Office (513-529-1650 or walkercl@MiamiOH.edu) for more information or to register for the golf outing. The program also will have a team scrimmage on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the Millett Hall sub-gym.

Women's Basketball will host an alumni reception on Friday evening following the Cradle of Coaches Dinner.
