COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two RedHawks earned top-five finishes Friday evening to lead the Miami University men’s track and field team on day one of the Jesse Owens Track Classic, hosted by Ohio State University at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Junior Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) placed fifth out of 31 throwers in the discus with a personal-best heave of 55.79m/183-0, which ranks third in school history and is the best discus throw for Miami since 1994. He improved his previous best throw by over 12 feet, reaching the personal-best mark on his first attempt of the night.
Senior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) finished fifth out of 51 runners in the 1500m run in 3:50.93, though he was third among collegiate competitors. In the 3000m steeplechase, redshirt senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) took eighth in a season-best 9:23.63.
Junior Daniel Garleb (Pickerington, Ohio) claimed seventh out of 44 runners in the 5000m run in 14:53.19 while in the 5000m run showcase, redshirt senior Steve Kiplagat (Iten, Kenya) crossed in 17th in 14:53.91.
The Jesse Owens Track Classic resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the pole vault while the first track event is the 4x100m relay at 12:10 p.m. The meet then concludes at 4:40 p.m. with the 4x400m relay. Live results are available on MURedHawks.com.
