KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Competing in the state of Tennessee for the second time in four weeks, the Miami University men’s track and field team recorded six top-10 individual finishes Friday, including four on the track, on day one of the Sea Ray Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Tom Black Track in LaPorte Stadium.
In the 5000m run, junior Daniel Garleb (Pickerington, Ohio) crossed in fourth (out of 28) in a personal-best 14:41.78. Senior Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) paced a trio of RedHawks in the 32-man 10,000m run, finishing 12th in 31:18.75, also a personal best. In the 3K steeplechase, redshirt senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) crossed in ninth in a season-best 9:24.02 to lead a quartet of RedHawks.
Juniors Wade Coffin (Willoughby, Ohio) and Kevin Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio) claimed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 800m run in 1:53.64 and 1:54.30. In the 400m dash, junior Robert Balzano (Poland, Ohio) placed 11th in 48.81 while classmate Jahquil Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) will run in the 400m showcase Saturday at 1 p.m.
In field action, senior John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) grabbed eighth (out of 20) with a personal-best triple jump of 14.55m/47-9, smashing his previous best by nearly four inches. Fellow senior Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) finished seventh out of 22 in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.70m/15-5, tying the same height as the fourth-place finisher but in more attempts.
Junior Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.), who was 20th in the hammer throw (53.09m/174-2) Thursday, placed 17th in the shot put with a toss of 16.01m/52-6, to round out day one action.
The RedHawks conclude action at the Sea Ray Relays Saturday, beginning with senior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) in the 1500m run showcase at 12:42 p.m. Hargrove runs his 400m showcase, as well, as the lone other individual race. Miami also has relay teams in the 4x100m at 2:25 p.m., the 4x800m relay at 3:10 p.m. and the final race of the day, the 4x400m relay, at 4:40 p.m. The RedHawks also have entrants in four field events Saturday, starting with the high jump at 12:15 p.m. and ending with the javelin at 3 p.m. Live results for Saturday can be found here, while live video is available here.
