OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University's men's basketball team has accepted a bid to participate in the 2011 College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen and will play at Rhode Island on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.
This is Miami's second appearance in the CBI, also earning a bid in the inaugural tournament in 2008 when the RedHawks faced eventual CBI champion Tulsa.
Miami, who boasts the nation's toughest non-conference schedule, enters the postseason with a 16-16 mark. The RedHawks posted an 11-5 Mid-American Conference record to finish second in the MAC East Division and earn the No. 3 seed in the MAC Tournament before being defeated in the quarterfinals by eventual tournament champion Akron.
Rhode Island enters the game with a 19-13 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the Atlantic 10. Rhode Island won its opening round game in the A-10 Tournament against Saint Louis before falling to eventual champion Richmond in the quarterfinals.
The Rams are led by seniors Delroy James and Marquis Jones. James, an Atlantic 10 and NABC Second Team selection leads the team in scoring (17.3), rebounding (7.8), blocked shots (1.1), and steals (1.6). Jones, who is averaging a career-best 11.4 points per game, is tops on the team in assists (3.7) for the third consecutive year.
This is the first meeting between the teams.
The CBI presented by Zebra Pen is a single-elimination tournament up until the "best-of-three" Championship Series, with all games played at campus sites. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be seeded. The Championship Series is a "best-of-three" in which the higher seeded team will host two of the three games.
