KINGSTON, R.I. -- Rhode Island used an 18-3 run midway throught the second half to break open a close game and cruise to a 76-59 victory in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen.
Junior forward Julian Mavunga tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Orlando Williams and junior guard Chris McHenry added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Williams also led the Red and White with five assists and added two steals.
The RedHawks hit nine 3-pointers in the game and set a program record for 3-point field goals in a season with 249 during the 33-game campaign. The previous record of 243 was set in 1994.
Delroy James led the Rams (20-13) with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
Miami (16-17) stayed within one midway through the first half, trailing 20-19, with 7:21 to play. But the Rams went on a 16-5 surge to close the half and take a 36-24 lead into the half.
After Rhode Island extended its lead to 16 in the second half, 44-28 with 16:51 to play, the RedHawks closed to within 46-40 by the 12-minute mark. Williams had eight points during the 12-2 RedHawk rally, whild Mavunga accounted for the other four Miami points during the run.
Rhode Island scored five straight points, starting with an Orion Outerbridge three, then answered a senior forward Nick Winbush three with a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach.
