With its non-conference schedule now complete, Miami turns its attention to the final three Mid-American Conference series, looking to solidify its position in the league standings.
This weekend, the Redhawks hit the road for the final time in 2013 when they travel to Bowling Green to face the Falcons. Games are set for 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Steller Field.
Miami (21-23, 10-8) split a pair of midweek encounters with Cincinnati Tuesday and Wednesday, falling 15-6 in the Queen City before winning 9-4 in Oxford. In their last conference action, the RedHawks lost two of three at Northern Illinois, rebounding on Sunday to take the finale 6-4.
Bowling Green (14-23, 8-10) has lost four of its last five games, including three at the hands of Kent State last weekend. Before that, though, the Falcons had won six in a row.
Freshman Jake Romano continues to lead Miami’s offensive attack, raising his average to .377 with three hits on Wednesday. Junior John Crummy stands second overall at .349, while sophomore Matt Honchel ranks third at .317.
Alex Johnson leads the club in home runs (three) and runs batted in (31).
Miami’s pitching rotation mirrors that of the last two weekends. Senior righty Brooks Fiala makes his 12th straight series-opening start Friday. He is 5-5 overall with a 2.64 ERA and leads the team with 76 strikeouts.
Senior right-hander Mac Thoreson (3-5, 4.88) is slated to throw in his usual spot Saturday, while Seth Varner draws the Sunday assignment for the third straight week. After making his first 14 appearances out of the bullpen, the sophomore lefty was moved into the conference rotation for the Ball State series. He is 1-0 with a 4.88 ERA.
Bowling Green counters with a pair of righties -- Cody Apthorpe and Mike Frank. The Falcons are undecided on a Sunday starter.
