CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Miami sophomore Matt Honchel has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced today. He is the third RedHawk in as many weeks joining teammates Brooks Fiala (Pitcher/March 18) and Ryan Elble (Player/March 25).
Honchel batted .462 with six hits in 13 at-bats, raising his season average to .365. He has had multiple hits in seven straight contests, 12 of 23 this season and 43 of 82 during his career. He had a double and triple among his six hits.
During the three-game series at Toledo, which featured two Miami wins, the Harrodsburg, Ky., native started each contest with a hit, scoring Saturday and Sunday to give the RedHawks a lead they would never relinquish. He scored two other times in the middle game, crossing the plate five times overall.
Honchel also stole two bases and was perfect in nine fielding chances.
The 2012 MAC Freshman of the Year, Honchel is hitting .429 in conference play through two weekends. A year ago, he led the league in hitting at .395.
Miami stands 12-11 overall, but is in sole possession of first place in the MAC at 5-1. The RedHawks travel to Ohio State on Wednesday before returning to league play Friday at Akron.
