CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Miami senior Brooks Fiala has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week for March 11-17, the league office announced today. Fiala is the first RedHawk to be honored this season.
A native of Carmel, Ind., Fiala turned in one of the best pitching performances in recent Miami history last week. In his only start, a complete-game, 6-0 win over Navy last Friday, he extended his scoreless inning streak to 16.2 innings pitched. Fiala allowed just two hits, including an infield single, while striking out a career-high 13 batters. He faced 31 Midshipmen, four over the minimum, hitting a pair a pair of batters.
The strikeout total was the highest by a Miami player since current Houston Astros pitcher John Ely fanned 14 against Bowling Gree on April 27, 2007.
Fiala, who has lowered his season ERA to 3.18, will take the mound again tomorrow afternoon when Miami opens its Mid-American Conference schedule at home against Eastern Michigan. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
