Miami Baseball makes its annual Spring Break trip to Florida this week when it competes at the Russ Matt Invitational. Overall, the RedHawks (2-6) will play seven games in eight days, all the Winter Haven area.
The first half of the trip includes contests against Illinois State (3-6) on Saturday, Fairfield (3-3) on Sunday and LIU-Brooklyn (0-6) on Monday.
Miami is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Mercer last weekend in Macon, Ga. A scheduled game against Xavier in Cincinnati on Tuesday was postponed by weather.
Senior Kevin Bower and sophomore Matt Packer share the team lead for batting, each hitting .286. Bower shares the team lead for hits with Matt Honchel at eight, while Scott Slappey has seven. Max Andresen has a club best five RBIs with four other players registering four.
Alex Johnson has homered twice to top the team in that category.
As a team, Miami is hitting just .205 with 56 hits in 273 at-bats. Only 12 of those have gone for extra bases.
Miami will juggle its rotation for the first three games of the trip. Senior Brooks Fiala (0-2, 6.23) will start the opener vs. the Cardinals after taking the mound on each of the first three Fridays. Sophomore Ryan Powers (1-0, 3.68) earns his first start of 2013 on Sunday vs. Fairfield, stepping into the role usually held by Mac Thoreson. Sophomore Nathan Williams (1-1, 5.73) wraps up the first half of the trip by drawing the nod on Monday vs. LIU-Brooklyn.
Senior Brandon Adkins has established themselves as the leaders out of the bullpen. Adkins has pitched in five games, earning saves in both Miami wins. He is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA.
As a staff, Miami is averaging seven strikeouts per game, while walking only 5.3 per contest. On the defensive side, Miami has a .966 fielding percentage and a team ERA of 6.24.
