CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati broke a 4-4 tie with a four-run fifth, then held on for an 15-6 victory over Miami Tuesday night at Marge Schott Stadium. Jake Romano and Kevin Bower had two hits apiece, while John Crummy homered and drove in a pair.

Miami (20-23) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. With one out, Dan Walsh tripled to right center. Scott Slappey dropped down a bunt for a single, but the pitcher's attempt at first was down the line allowing Walsh to come home. Max Andresen followed with a near repeat of Walsh's drive for an RBI triple, then Ryan Elble singled sharply to left for the third run.

UC (18-25) struck back in the bottom of the inning, also with one out. A single and two walks loaded the bases before a two-run single past Walsh at third put the Bearcats on the board. An ensuing groundout tied the game at 3.

Crummy's second home run of the season put Miami back ahead, but the Bearcats answered on a balk to pull even 4-4. UC took its first lead in the fourth, scoring four runs. An error to start the frame was followed by a double for the first run. After a stolen base and sacrifice fly that made the score 6-4, Brian Ghiselli replaced starter Brian Thene. The freshman got the second out, but gave up a two-run homer to cap the inning.

Miami tried to chip away at the lead, scoring a run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Crummy. The play scored Romano, who singled and went to third when Bower singled.

But UC answered with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to regain control. Miami tallied a run in the seventh when Romano singled and scored on an error, but the Bearcats plated a run in the seventh and got a three-run homer in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Thene (2-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) and six hits over 3.1 innings. Christian McElroy (3-5) pitched into the eighth to earn the win.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow when the series shifts to McKie Field in Oxford. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
