AKRON, Ohio – The fifth-seeded Miami University softball team got off to a successful start in the 2013 MAC Tournament with a dramatic, 5-4, victory over eighth-seeded Toledo Wednesday afternoon. The RedHawks improve to 20-32 overall, while the Rockets fall to 16-35.

With the win, Miami will play fourth-seeded Northern Illinois later Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The RedHawks got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Tiyona Marshall reached on an error. Hailey Reed walked. One batter later, Kayla Ledbetter singled to score Marshall. Shanyn McIntyre followed with a double to right center, scoring both Reed and Ledbetter, giving Miami a 3-0 lead.

Jenna Modic kept Toledo scoreless over her first three innings of work. In the top of the fourth, the Rockets got their offense going with six hits that brought home four runs and gave them their first lead at 4-3. Megan Mattera would come in to relieve Modic and recorded the final out to get the RedHawks out the jam without further damage done.

Mattera led off the bottom of the fourth inning and quickly retied the game with a home run to center field.  She stayed in the circle and shut out the Rockets over the next three innings to send the game to the bottom of the seventh tied at four.

Kristy Arbour led off the bottom of the seventh with a single over the first baseman. Taylor Shuey put down a sacrifice bunt, but Toledo attempted to get Arbour out at second. The Rockets were unsuccessful and Miami had runners at first and second with no one out. Marshall followed with a bunt attempt of her own. Toledo’s pitcher threw the ball away attempting to retire her, and Arbour came around to score the winning run.

McIntyre finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI. She also earned the victory after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on four hits. Marshall and Modic each recorded two hits for the RedHawks.
