GLENVIEW, Ill. - Rising senior Brett Tomfohrde completed a spectacular week by finishing in a tie for third at the Illinois Open Wednesday. Tomfohrde shot rounds of 69-71-69 to finish the event at seven-under par. He was the top finishing amateur and was only three shots behind the winner, professional golfer Max Scodro of Chicago, Ill.
The finish is one of Tomfohrde's strongest of his amateur career, and his best finish ever competing in a full field professional tournament. His top finish at Miami came this past season, when he tied for 10th at the Rio Pinar Invitational with a score of three-under par.
The RedHawks other Illinois native golfer, rising sophomore Scott Cahill, also qualified for the event. He made the cut and finished 53rd overall at seven-over par.
By finishing in the top 15 this year, Tomfohrde receives an automatic spot in next year's Illinois Open without having to participate in qualifying.
This continues the strong play by Miami golfers this summer. Recently, rising junior Austin Kelly finished tied for 11th at the Investors Group Ontario Amateur Championship (July 10-13). He shot a final round 67 to finish the event at four-over par.
