IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Miami men’s golf team continues its three tournament preparation stretch for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament. Next up for the RedHawks is the Hawkeye Invitational this weekend. Miami will play 36 holes on Friday at finish the event up with one final round of 18 holes on Saturday.
“After moving up the leaderboard in each of the last two rounds at Penn State, the boys are excited to build off of the momentum of that finish,” said head coach Zac Zedrick. “It’s been a brief, but incredibly productive week here in Oxford.”
Representing Miami at this weekend’s event will be juniors Ben Peacock and Brett Tomfohrde, sophomore Mark MacDonald, along with freshmen Luke Shaughnessy and Scott Cahill. They will be tackling the University of Iowa’s Finkbine Golf Course, which is par-72, 7,180 yards.
“Finkbine is a really good golf course,” commented Zedrick. “It’s fairly demanding off of the tee and the greens are very difficult, usually pretty quick and with a lot of undulation. It’s a course where you can shoot low scores, but you have to stay patient and ensure you’re missing it in the proper places.”
The RedHawks will face one of the toughest fields they have seen in any tournament this season. In addition to the host Iowa (ranked 26th in the nation), also joining Miami will be Iowa State, Charlotte, Michigan State, Minnesota, UMKC, Washington State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Nebraska.
“For us this week, it’s about being smart and having fun,” said Zedrick. “The weather and conditions this time of year in the Midwest can be very challenging and if you don’t embrace it, you’re done. We made sure to not let the conditions affect us last weekend and I’m confident we’ll stay in the moment and do that again.”
