MUNCIE, Ind. - The Miami University softball team is on the road for the final time during the 2014 regular season. The RedHawks travel to Muncie over the weekend for a pair of important contests against Ball State. Miami takes on the Cardinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The ‘Hawks then travel to Butler Tuesday for a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.

ABOUT BALL STATE: The Cardinals are 27-16 overall and lead the MAC West Division with a 7-3 record. They are coming off a 3-1 weekend in which they split a doubleheader with Akron on Friday, and then swept a weekend series with Ohio in impressive fashion. They took the opener on Saturday, 10-0, in five innings, and then won 7-0 on Sunday. Ball State is a strong offensive team, leading the MAC with a .324 batting average. Its top player is senior outfielder and All-American candidate Jennifer Gilbert. She is hitting .420 with 17 home runs and 54 RBI. She ranks in the NCAA top-10 all-time in career home runs. Its top pitcher is sophomore Kelsey Schifferdecker. She is 13-5 overall with a 3.29 ERA in 24 appearances (18 starts).

SERIES WITH BALL STATE: Ball State holds a 49-41 lead in the all-time series with Miami. The teams split a doubleheader in Muncie last season on April 21. Behind a strong pitching performance from Jenna Modic and Paige Myers, the RedHawks took the opener, 3-1. The Cardinals responded to take the nightcap, 6-0.  

ABOUT BUTLER: Butler is 21-24 overall and 7-7 in the Big East. Prior to facing Miami, the Bulldogs will have a three-game weekend series at Seton Hall. They have won four straight games, including sweeping a doubleheader at Eastern Illinois on Tuesday. Butler is led offensively by sophomore shortstop Alex Kotter. She is hitting .305 with three home runs and 23 RBI. Its top pitcher is sophomore Kristin Gutierrez. She is 12-10 with a 2.77 ERA in 27 appearance (24 starts).

SERIES WITH BUTLER: Miami holds a 23-5-1 lead in the all-time series with Butler. The RedHawks swept a doubleheader in Oxford last season on April 2. Miami took a 5-4 win in eight innings in the opener. It then came back with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. The RedHawks have won 13 straight games against the Bulldogs.

UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: The final weekend of the regular season is upon Miami. The RedHawks will host Eastern Michigan on Friday, May 2 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Miami then welcomes Central Michigan for single games on Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will also be Senior Day, with the RedHawks’ five seniors honored in a pregame ceremony.
