OXFORD, Ohio – Leading each of their teams to victory last week, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of April 15-21 are senior pitcher Brooks Fiala for the men and sophomore outfielder Tiyona Marshall on the women’s side.
Fiala (Carmel, Ind.) got the weekend off on a positive note, pacing the RedHawks baseball team to a 1-0 win over Ball State on Friday night. He threw eight shutout innings, while allowing just five hits, all of which were singles. The right-handed hurler did not walk a batter and struck out 12 Cardinals, one shy of his career high, while it marked the second time in his career (both this season) that he reached double figures for strikeouts. Ball State batted just .185 in the contest against Fiala, who finished with 115 pitches thrown.
Fiala has now earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week twice this year and in his career, earning it for the first time for the week of March 11-17 when he tossed 13 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout of Navy. He also garnered MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his efforts, his second time winning the honor this year.
Marshall (Columbus, Ohio) found her way on base in nearly every at-bat she took this week, finishing with a .700 average (7-for-10). She drove in a pair of runs in a 5-4 victory over Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, including the game-winning run. She then had five hits in a doubleheader against Ball State, four of which were of the infield variety. Marshall scored twice in Miami’s 3-1 victory in the opener, helping hand the Cardinals their first MAC loss of the season.
The Miami Female Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Marshall’s career. She is the second softball player to claim the distinction this season, along with junior Kayla Ledbetter.
Fiala and the baseball team are back in action with a home-and-home series against Dayton Tuesday and Wednesday, hosting the Flyers on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Fiala will be back on the hill this weekend when Miami begins a three-game series with Northern Illinois Friday to Sunday in DeKalb, Ill. April 26-28. Marshall and the softball team also return to the diamond this weekend, playing a doubleheader at Eastern Michigan Friday before battling Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant Saturday and Sunday.
