OXFORD, Ohio - After both opened their spring seasons with stellar performances, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Feb. 11-17 are junior catcher Kayla Ledbetter on the women's side and junior golfer Mark MacDonald for the men.
Ledbetter (Gahanna, Ohio) had a fantastic opening week with a .500 batting average, including two home runs and a double. She drew an incredible 10 walks in 18 plate appearances to finish with an on-base percentage of .778. Thanks to the power she showed, she had a 1.375 slugging percentage for the week. Ledbetter had two 2-run home runs against 24th-ranked Georgia Tech on Friday and finished with four RBIs. She drove in two more RBIs on a double against Marshall on Saturday. She got her seventh RBI of the weekend against Marshall Sunday when she drew a bases loaded walk. Ledbetter was great defensively all weekend. She had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, finishing with 21 total putouts and five assists. She threw out five runners that attempted to steal on her this weekend.
The Miami Female Athlete of the Week honor is the first of her career. She also earned Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week on Tuesday, the third time she has garnered the award in her career but first time this season.
MacDonald (Dublin, Ohio) was 3-0 in the Mid-American Match Play this week. He won both of his matches on Monday, taking a 3-and-1 win in the morning against Eastern Michigan and a 4-and-2 victory in the afternoon vs. Ohio. On Tuesday he fell behind his opponent from Toledo by four holes after eight were completed. He came all the way back to win his match 1UP, however, and complete the perfect week.
The Miami Male Athlete of the Week accolade is the first of MacDonald's career, as well.
Ledbetter and the softball team are back in action this weekend at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. where they'll play five games, starting with Eastern Kentucky and Boston College on Friday, Feb. 22. MacDonald and the golf team return to the course in three weeks when they compete at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate March 10-12 in Pinehurst, N.C.
