OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University softball coach Clarisa Crowell released the team's 2013 schedule on Monday. The schedule features four early-season tournaments, including one in San Diego, Calif., to help prepare the RedHawks for their 22-game Mid-American Conference schedule. The 2013 slate features 12 homes games and eight contests against seven different schools that made the NCAA Tournament last season.
The schedule begins in Atlanta, where Miami will take part in the Georgia Tech Classic, Feb. 15-17. In that tournament, the RedHawks will open with Indiana and will also take on Marshall and host Georgia Tech twice.
The following weekend (Feb. 22-24) will feature the RedHawks at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. In addition to host Chattanooga, Miami will face Eastern Kentucky, Boston College, Tennessee Tech and Lipscomb at that event. Two weeks later, the Red and White will have a significant challenge at the Red and Black Tournament in Louisville, Ky. (Mar. 8-10). In addition to a pair of contests against Austin Peay, Miami will face three 2012 NCAA Tournament teams in host Louisville, Michigan and Illinois State.
The 'Hawks annual spring break trip will take them to sunny San Diego. On Mar. 13, Miami will take on San Diego State in a single game. It will then participate in the San Diego Classic, Mar. 14-16. UT-Arlington, Seton Hall, Long Beach State, Colorado State and Harvard will be the opponents in that tournament.
After playing their first 21 games on the road, the RedHawks will open the home schedule on Mar. 26 when they host Morehead State at the Miami Softball Stadium. Other home contests this season include a doubleheader vs. Butler (Apr. 2) and MAC contests against Western Michigan (Apr. 5 - doubleheader), Northern Illinois (Apr. 6 and 7), Kent State (May 3 - doubleheader) and Buffalo (May 4 and 5).
Miami will spend the majority of MAC play on the road based on the scheduling format that saw the team host the majority of its games last season. The RedHawks will have trips to Ohio (Apr. 12 - doubleheader), Akron (Apr. 13 and 14), Ball State (Apr. 20 and 21), Eastern Michigan (Apr. 26 - doubleheader) and Central Michigan (Apr. 27 and 28). Miami will also have a pair of non-conference doubleheaders on the road against Northern Kentucky (Apr. 16) and Wright State (Apr. 30).
The RedHawks will look to defend their MAC Tournament crown May 8-11 when they travel to Firestone Stadium in Akron for the 2013 MAC Tournament. The top eight teams in the regular season standings will participate in the double-elimination event.
Miami returns 12 letterwinners from last season's record-setting squad that went 41-20 overall and won the MAC East Division with a 16-6 record. The RedHawks won the 2012 MAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Knoxville, where they shocked fifth-ranked Tennessee, 1-0, in the opening game.
