OXFORD, Ohio - After each achieved historical milestones over the weekend, sophomore sprinter Jahquil Hargrove and senior pitcher Jessica Simpson have been named Miami’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 30 to May 6.

Jahquil Hargrove

Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) ran a blistering 400m dash Friday at Indiana’s Billy Hayes Invitational, winning the race in a personal-best 47.09, which ranks fourth in school history. His time is tops in the MAC by half a second and ranks 82nd nationally. He finished just over eight-tenths of a second ahead of the runner-up in a field of 15. Hargrove also improved his previous-best time by .14 of a second (was 47.23) and posted the fastest 400m time at Miami since 1988.

The honor is the second of Hargrove’s career, also winning Miami Male Athlete of the Week for the week of April 2-8.

Jessica Simpson

Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) had one final great week as she earned three more victories to finish the regular season with 26. She allowed only two earned runs in 21.2 innings pitched for an ERA of 0.65. Opponents batted only .190 against her. Simpson got her first victory on Friday when she struck out 12, while allowing only two runs in a 3-2 victory over Bowling Green. Those were the only earned runs she allowed all weekend as she shut out the Falcons over the last 2.2 innings in the nightcap of the doubleheader on Friday. On Saturday, Simpson blanked Toledo, 2-0, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. It was the 43rd shutout of her career, tying the MAC record. She finished her week by pitching five innings in Miami’s 9-1 win over the Rockets on Sunday. Simpson struck out 23 batters in her four games and had a WHIP of 0.88.

Simpson garnered Miami Female Athlete of the Week for the third straight week and fifth time this season.

Both athletes compete for a MAC Championship this weekend as Hargrove travels to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. for the MAC Track & Field Championships May 10-12 while Simpson and the softball team head to Akron, Ohio for the MAC Tournament, which is also May 10-12.
