The Miami RedHawks women’s swimming and diving team begins the 2013-2014 season this weekend hosting Purdue Friday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. and then Xavier on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center.

The RedHawk women are looking to start strong this season, under new head coach Mark Davis, after winning their 17th MAC Championship last season and finishing 6-0 in conference competition. The RedHawks are replacing 13 graduating seniors from last season, but Miami is favored to repeat as Conference Champions in the Mid-American Conference preseason swimming and diving polls, as voted on by MAC coaches.

Purdue is coming off a season where they finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships and finished 19th at the NCAA Championships, sending eight swimmers and divers to the NCAA Championships. Six of those who qualified return this season, including senior diver, Casey Matthews, who is coming off a National Championship in 3-meter diving. This is Purdue’s first action of 2013. These two teams competed last season with Purdue winning, 179-109.

Xavier, now a member of the Big East, is coming off a win over the University of the Cumberlands last Saturday, Oct. 12, following a loss to Louisville Oct. 11. Xavier also competed in the Butler Fall Invitational earlier this season and has a meet against the Cincinnati Bearcats this Friday, Oct. 18. Last season, Xavier finished 10th at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. Miami beat Xavier, 165.5-87.5, when these teams competed last season.
