OXFORD, Ohio - Nineteen swimmers from Miami University's men's and women's swimming teams will compete in the Ohio Senior Championships, hosted by the Miami Valley Aquatic Club Mar. 1-3 at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Preliminaries will be held each day starting at 9 a.m., while finals will begin at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
This weekend's meet will include 14 swimmers from head coach Dave Jennings' varsity women's swimming team. Seniors Laura Krueger and Ellen Barhorst will lead the group of RedHawks in the butterfly, freestyle, and backstroke events, while junior Michaela Scott will take on the breaststroke and IM races. Sophomores Emma Craig, Caitlyn Fujan, and Annie Marquiss will also compete at home this weekend.
Eight of Miami's 10 freshmen will race in the Ohio Senior Championships. The list of RedHawk swimmers include Shannon Ahearn, Katherine Blodgett, Christina Favia, Sara Krueger, Stephanie Nemeth, Kelly Rogers, Natalie Rohr, and Gabrielle Veri.
Five of the 19 swimmers are representatives of Pete Lindsay's men's swimming team at the Ohio Senior meet. Sophomore Chris Breger, a freestyle and butterfly swimmer for the RedHawks, will try his luck at some of the longer 200-yard races. Junior Maxwell Cain will compete in the 100 and 200 free events, while sophomore Michael Heavilon will have a go with some of the sprint events in the backstroke and butterfly. Sophomore Sam Reeder is prepared to take on the 50 and 100 free and backstroke races, and freshman Tyler Simonton will focus on the back and free races.
The Ohio Senior Championships, also known as the Tim Myers Memorial Senior Championships, is an opportunity for strong, motivated Ohio swimmers to compete against each other and get some experience swimming at a collegiate level.
The meet is open to swimmers ages 14 and up who are registered with Ohio Swimming, Inc., and have competed in a high school level swim competition. While high school swimmers see many of the same races at the OHSSA Swimming and Diving Championships as swimmers do in college competition, the Ohio Senior Championships allows high school athletes to compete in collegiate level events, including the 1650 free, the 800 free relay and 400 medley relay, and the 200 back and breaststroke races.
The meet is a popular event for both high school and college swimmers, and according to Lindsay, the Miami Valley Aquatic Club will welcome between 400 and 500 Ohio swimmers to the meet this weekend.
The meet will open with the 100 fly Friday morning, then progress through the 500 free, 50 free, 200 IM, 100 breast, and 800 free relay.
Saturday's schedule of events include the 400 medley relay, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 400 individual relay, 200 free relay, and the 1650 free.
Sunday's closing events are: 200 medley relay, 200 free, 100 back, 200 fly, and 400 free relay.
The Ohio Senior Championships will begin 9 a.m. Friday morning, with no admission charge over the entire week. The remaining swimmers of Miami's women's swimming team will be competing in Buffalo, NY at the 2013 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships Feb. 28 - Mar. 2. The men's team will travel to Carbondale, Ill. next week for the MAC tournament Mar. 7 - 9.
