OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Nov. 26-Dec. 2 are sophomore forward Austin Czarnik of the hockey team and senior swimmer Bekka Westrick.
Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) totaled five points on a goal and four assists at Alaska last weekend. In Friday's 5-2 win, he tied a career high with three points, scoring Miami's first goal and adding two assists, including one on the game-winner. It was his third three-point game this year and seventh of his career. He was also +3 in the game. In Saturday's 4-0 shutout, he dished out two more assists for his sixth multi-point game of the year. Once more he had the primary assist on the game-winning goal, while his other assist came on a long outlet pass after he grabbed a loose puck in front of Miami's net and found a teammate alone at mid-ice for a breakaway goal. Czarnik finished with a +4 rating on the weekend and earned the game's second star Friday and third star on Saturday.
This is the second time this year, and of his career, that Czarnik has earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week. He was also named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Westrick (Fairfield, Ohio) had a record-setting weekend at the 2012 Miami Invitational (Nov. 29-Dec. 1), breaking three school records, three pool records and two meet records. On Thursday, she broke Miami's record for the 200 freestyle on her leadoff leg (1:47.55) in the event-winning 800 freestyle relay. On Friday, in the individual 200 free, Westrick let loose with a first-place and school record time of 1:47.29. Later Friday evening, in her 50 free victory, she nearly broke the Miami and pool records with a time of 22.75. On Saturday, in her 100 butterfly triumph, Westrick's winning time of 52.91 set school, meet and pool records. She also won the 100 free event in 49.93, slightly slower than the pool record of 49.59. Westrick's blazing anchor leg in the 400 free relay led Miami to victory in 3:21.97, just a fraction of a second slower than the varsity record of 3:21.53.
Westrick has now received Miami's Female Athlete of the Week honor four times in her career with Tuesday's recognition her first this season.
Czarnik and the No. 3 hockey team are back on the ice this weekend, hosting Lake Superior State Friday and Saturday at Steve Cady Arena. Westrick and the swimming team are off for winter break, but return to the pool Jan. 3 with a meet against James Madison while on a training trip in Boca Raton, Fla.
