OXFORD, Ohio – A seven-game unbeaten streak, including five consecutive shutouts, has Miami Women’s Soccer in the thick of a heated battle for the Mid-American Conference regular season championship. The RedHawks have improved to 8-6-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the MAC after starting the season 3-6-0 and are just one point in the conference standings behind the two first-place teams.
This weekend, Miami will put its streak on the line as it hosts first-place Central Michigan in the final regular-season home game of the year on Friday before traveling to Bowling Green on Sunday.
Junior forward Kelsey Dinges, transitioning from the midfield, now leads the team with 17 points on six goals and five assists after a three goal weekend Oct. 18-20. Dinges scored the insurance goal in a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois last Friday before scoring both goals in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Toledo. Her six goals are tied for the team lead with senior captain Katy Dolesh and her five assists are second to senior midfielder Kayla Zakrzewski’s six. Zakrzewski and Dolesh are both in double-digits for points with 16 and 14, respectively.
Last weekend freshman forward Rachel Marble was the other RedHawk to score as she opened the scoring Friday afternoon with the first goal of her career in the fourth minute of the match. Sophomore midfielder Haley Walter assisted on Dinges’ goal on Friday while a pair of midfielders, sophomore Jess Bronke and freshman Jenna Weiner, set up her two goals on Sunday.
Senior goalkeeper Allison Norenberg improved her Miami record for career shutouts to 20 with her fifth-consecutive clean sheet. She now has eight shutouts on the season with a 1.14 goals against average and .723 save percentage.
The Chippewas (6-9-1, 6-2-0 MAC), tied with Eastern Michigan for first in the league, have won four straight after defeating Akron, 2-0, last Friday and Buffalo, 1-0 in double overtime, on Sunday. Leading scorer, Laura Gosse upped her season-total to five goals with two of the team’s three tallies over the weekend. Keeper Grace Labrecque has a 0.88 goals against average and .833 save percentage on the season with five shutouts.
The RedHawks will travel to Bowling Green on Sunday to take on the winless Falcons (0-13-1, 0-7-1 MAC). In their two most recent games, the Falcons fell to Buffalo, 0-1, and Akron, 1-2. Madeline Wideman leads the team in all offensive categories with nine points on three goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Lauren Cadel has started all 14 games for the team and has a 2.14 goals against average and .796 save percentage. Bowling Green will host Ball State on Friday before the RedHawks come to town for the Falcons’ Senior Day.
