MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Miami women’s tennis wrapped up Day 1 of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional. Miami sent one of three singles players to the main draw from the qualifying round as well as one of two doubles teams.
The morning started off well for the Red & White with two wins in the first round of the doubles qualifying bracket. Senior Christiana Raymond and Freshman Andreea Badileanu won 8-3 over Faouzi and Rodriguez from Eastern Kentucky University. Meanwhile, sophomores Ana Rajkovic and Chloe Heerden defeated Moreno and Milovic from the University of Evansville by a score of 8-4.
In the second round of doubles qualifiers, Raymond and Badileanu won their match 8-4 while Heerden and Rajkovic fell in a close match 7-8 (5-7).
In singles play, Heerden won her first qualifying match 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2 over Butler’s Stephanie McLoughlin. Rajkovic fell in her qualifying bout 2-6, 6-3, 1-6 while junior Ramona Costea also lost 2-6, 4-6.
In Heerden’s second singles match of the day, the sophomore came out victorious by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, securing a spot in the main draw singles bracket.
The USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional continues Saturday morning. The tournament’s second day consists of opening play in both main draw singles and main draw doubles.
