COLUMBUS, Ohio - With the meet up for grabs, Cincinnati narrowly beat out the Miami University men's track and field team in the final relay to clip the RedHawks, 70-61, in a dual meet Friday evening at The Capital Center on the campus of Capital University. The dual was the second and final indoor meet for Miami this season, as the RedHawks are allowed to compete in up to three indoor meets to prepare for outdoor competition, per NCAA rules.

With the Bearcats leading Miami, 65-61, heading into the 4x400m relay, UC's 'A' team finished just in front of Miami's 'B' team of junior Kevin Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio), classmate Wade Coffin (Willoughby, Ohio), senior Jack Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and freshman Joey Comisford (Granville, Ohio) to collect the final five points. Cincinnati clocked 3:26.12 while the quartet of 'Hawks crossed in a combined 3:28.67.

Despite the relay loss, the RedHawks won five of the other eight track events. Senior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) paced Miami on the track, totaling 10 points himself with a pair of wins in the mile run and the 3000m run. He finished first in a personal-best 4:18.03 in the mile and recorded a time of 8:29.33 to claim his first 3K. Senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) placed third in the 3K in 8:35.04.

Miami captured eight points in the 200m dash as freshman Adam Bodrick (Columbus, Ohio) won in 22.91 while senior Sam Spallinger (Pandora, Ohio) was second in 23.14. Brown took first in the 600m run in a season-best 1:20.88 for five points while Comisford picked up another point by taking third in 1:22.23, also a season best. Spilman and Coffin went 1-3 in the 800m run to garner six points, posting times of 1:55.40 and 1:56.10, respectively.

In the 400m dash, junior Robert Balzano (Poland, Ohio) was second in a season-best 50.29 while Bodrick took third in another season-best 50.80, as the two earned four points for the RedHawks. Sophomore JaShawn Combs (Dayton, Ohio) was second in the 60m hurdles in 8.23, also a season best.

In field action, freshman Peter Stefanski (Aurora, Ill.) won the high jump, clearing 1.95m/6-4.75 while junior Matt Gambill (Dover, N.H.) took third, topping 1.90m/6-2.75, as the duo totaled six points. In the long jump, Miami placed second and third as Spallinger and senior John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) posted leaps of 7.06m/23-2 and 7.03m/23-0.75, respectively, for four points. Cantwell also grabbed third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.95m/45-9.75, as he recorded season bests in both of his events.

Junior Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) earned eight points in the throws by finishing first in the shot put with a season-best heave of 16.24m/53-3.5 while he was runner-up in his first weight throw with a toss of 14.40m/47-3. Freshman Paul Golen (Elmhurst, Ill.) claimed second in the shot put with a throw of 14.87m/48-9.5, also a season best, while senior Lucas Ferguson (Mount Vernon, Ohio) captured third in the weight throw with a mark of 13.80m/45-3.

The RedHawks open outdoor season March 22-23 at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
