OXFORD, Ohio—Miami University’s baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs to seize an 11-3 win over the Western Michigan University Broncos on Friday evening at McKie Field at Hayden park in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.

The Broncos (9-9; 0-1 MAC) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when WMU scored off four hits with two RedHawk errors.

But the RedHawks (9-9; 1-0 MAC) fired right back in the bottom of the inning. Junior left fielder Matt Honchel and sophomore right fielder Jacob Wolf tagged RBI singles to put the RedHawks within one of the Broncos, and sophomore outfielder Jake Romano launched a two-RBI double to right field to hand Miami a 4-3 edge. Junior first baseman Scott Slappy had an RBI single up the middle, while sophomore designated hitter Gary Russo had an RBI single through the left side as Miami upped its lead to 6-3 off of six hits.

Miami tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior shortstop Ryan Elble hit a double off the right centerfield wall and was plated off a senior third baseman Dan Walsh single through the right side. With two outs, freshman second baseman Steve Sada singled down the right field line to send pinch runner sophomore Reed Schlesner and Honchel across the plate to hand Miami a sizeable 9-3 lead.

With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Walsh reached on an error which allowed Russo to score. Honchel then singled to second base to plate junior catcher Max Andresen to hand Miami an 11-3 lead heading into the top of the ninth.

The RedHawks gave up one hit in the top of the ninth, but freshman reliever Jacob Banks struck out Jared Kujawa to ice the game.

Senior pitcher Seth Varner earned the win on the mound to move to 4-1 on the season. Varner pitched 7.0 innings, giving up just two earned runs off seven hits while striking out nine Bronco batters.

The RedHawks amassed 16 hits, while the Broncos recorded 9.

Miami continues its three-game series with the Broncos at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
