BUFFALO, N.Y.—Men’s swimming and diving kicked off the Mid-American Conference Championships Thursday night with a fourth-place team ranking through the competition’s first six events in the Alumni Arena Natatorium at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y.

The RedHawks had their best finish of the evening in the first event with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay team, comprised of junior Joe Baumgartner, freshman Lucas Brock, sophomore Jacob Prodoehl and senior Dan Nemeth posted a time of 1:20.22, tying the University at Buffalo’s relay team and earning 33 points towards the team rankings.

Sophomore Christopher Dieter finished eleventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:29.94. Senior Sean Minderlein took fourteenth (4:32.58).

Junior Andrew Kilkenny led the RedHawks in the 200 IM. He took eleventh and swam a time of 1:51.06. Sophomore Evan Bader took thirteenth (1:51.98), senior Michael Cavanaugh took fourteenth (1:53.20) and senior Sam Flessner finished sixteenth with a time of 1:53.40.

Miami’s best event, as a team, was the 50 freestyle with four RedHawks qualifying for the top final heat. Baumgartner finished third with a time of 20.44. Brock, Nemeth and Prodoehl took sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Brock swam a 20.60 time. Nemeth and Prodoehl swam 20.80 and 20.85, respectively. Freshman Jack Strauss added a fourteenth-place finish with a 21.05 time.

Sophomore Michael Nash finished fifth for Miami in the one-meter diving event with a 313.45 final score. Sophomore Cole Fryman finished eleventh (284.70 points) and freshman Sean Sargent added a fourteenth-place finish in the event (273.05 points).

The RedHawks concluded the evening with a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay by sophomore Davis Staley, Bader, freshman Grant Stafford and Baumgartner (3:15.72).

Miami returns to action tomorrow at the Alumni Arena Natatorium with preliminary events beginning at 11 a.m. Finals will take place tomorrow evening beginning at 7 p.m.
