LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Miami University women’s basketball team dropped a tough 76-61 decision to Long Beach State Tuesday night to begin its California road trip. The RedHawks fall to 3-6 on the season, while the 49ers improve to 6-4.
It was a tough shooting night for Miami as it finished the game 23-for-65 (35.4 percent). The RedHawks also had 25 turnovers, which led to 28 LBSU points. Senior guard Hannah Robertson led MU with 12 points.
The pace was fast from the start. After the 49ers hit an opening three-pointer, Hannah Robertson answered with a trey of her own. A layup from freshman forward Nicole Anderson gave Miami an early 5-3 advantage. Long Beach State followed with a 14-4 run to take control of the contest at 17-9 with 11:35 remaining in the half.
A three-pointer from junior guard Kindsay Brandt ended the 49er run and cut the deficit to five, but LBSU eventually pushed the lead to 10 at 24-14 with 7:17 to go. Three-pointers from junior guard Courtney Larson and senior guard Haley Robertson started a 9-0 Miami run that pulled the ‘Hawks to within one at 24-23. Despite layups from sophomore forward Jessica Rupright and senior forward Erica Almady, Long Beach State was able to hit a pair of three-pointers to close the half on a 10-4 run and take a 34-27 lead into the break.
The RedHawks shot 10-for-30 (33.0 percent) for the half, while holding LBSU to 13-for-40 (32.5 percent) shooting. Miami got contributions from nearly everyone on the roster as 10 different players scored during the period. Anderson and Almady led the ‘Hawks with four points apiece.
After the 49ers opened the second half with a layup, back-to-back three-pointers from Anderson and Haley Robertson made it a three-point game at 36-33. The RedHawks’ shot went cold from there and Long Beach State took advantage with a 16-6 run over the next eight minutes to take a 53-39 lead with 10:29 to go in the game.
Rupright and Brandt each hit shots, but LBSU was still in front, 63-49 with 4:43 to go. Hannah Robertson drained a three-pointer, but the 49ers responded with a jumper. A three-pointer by Haley Robertson, followed by a layup from Brandt made it a single-digit deficit at 65-57 at the 3:05 mark. Long Beach State answered with five straight points on a layup and a three-pointer, and then hit its free throws down the stretch to finish off a 76-61 victory.
In addition to Hannah Robertson’s 12 points, Brandt scored 11. Haley Robertson contributed nine points to go with a team-high six assists and two blocks. Anderson had a monster game on the boards, finishing with a team-high 15, including seven offensive. She also had seven points, an assist, a steal and a block in 26 minutes. As a team, Miami outrebounded LBSU, 50-38, and brought in 23 offensive rebounds.
