OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami football team completed its second week of spring practice Saturday with a 90-minute scrimmage that focused on specific situations. In addition to some open-field scrimmaging, the RedHawks spent several periods on their red-zone and goal-line offenses, worked from their own endzone and practiced the two-minute drill.
Special teams play was took a big focus with the punt and punt return teams taking center stage midway through and a a series of field-goal challenges to end the workout. Miami has a little more than one week remaining on the spring schedule, which affords 15 practice sessions in a month-long span.
Senior quarterback Austin Boucher led the offense in open-field play with 45 yards on 19 carries. He also completed seven passes for 65 yards, including a 10-yard score to Dawan Scott. Austin Gearing and Drew Kummer split time with the second unit, both scoring on runs during the red-zone period.
Overall, the Miami defense seemed to own the day, allowing under 300 yards on 74 plays. It also registered a pair of safeties in the opening series, when the offense worked from an inside-the-five starting point.
"We did a lot of specific situations today,: Head Coach Don Treadwell said. "At times, certain things happen during the course of a drive, but we wanted to make sure we practiced some things directly. We were going to make sure we get some highlighted areas on tape.
"I liked the atmosphere and tempo, the enthusiasm," Treadwell continued. "If the techniques show up when we break down the film, then it proves we are going in the right direction."
Spring practice will wrap up next Saturday with the Spring Showcase. Overall, it has been a positive situation. "We have tried to stay focused on the areas that need improvement," Treadwell said. "We need to run the ball more and we have dlerly demonstrated that. Our defense needs to stop the run and we have done that, too. And we have gotten better making tackles in the open field. If we continue to do those three things. and perform at a better overall rate as we finish the spring, it's moving along in the right direction."
