OXFORD, Ohio -- Highlighted by five returning letter winners, Miami University's wide receiver corps figures to once again be one of the Mid-American Conference's best.
Head Coach Don Treadwell knows that this group includes some of his best playmakers.
"The receiver position is one that has experience for us," said Treadwell. "I think that will be huge. Last season at Michigan State, we had a veteran receiver core and it was a big factor in the success that we had there, going on to win the Big Ten championship. When you have experience, you want to get the ball into the playmakers' hands. A lot of those young men have demonstrated that they are playmakers. It will be fun to come up with ways to make sure that we can get them the ball."
First-year receivers coach MARK SPENCER has eight candidates among the wide receivers this spring, including returning letter winners ANDY CRUSE (Cincinnati), Chris Givens (Chillicothe), DeMarco Paine (St. Louis, MO).
During the 2010 season, that quintet combined for 149 catches and 1,881 yards.
Graduating seniors and career statistical leaders Armand Robinson and Jamal Rogers have seen their eligibility expire, so it's time for others to step up in their place.
Non-letter winners who are competing for playing time this spring include walk-ons J.J. Greenwood (Middletown) and Jake Wurzelbacher (Ross).
In August, this group of receivers will be joined by incoming freshmen DAVID FRAZIER (Columbia, SC) and ALVONTA JENKINS (Camden, SC).
Miami's spring practice squad plays in the annual Red and White Game on Friday, April 15, at Yager Stadium. The action begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
