OXFORD, Ohio - When the subject of sports is discussed among fans, the subject of greatest players and greatest teams eventually enters into the conversation. During the month of June, Miami football fans are being asked to participate in an MURedHawks.com poll to select the greatest RedHawk players of the first decade of the 21st century.
While some of the fans' choices may be more obvious than others, this survey includes the names of more than 160 different RedHawk players who were multiple-game starters in contests from 2000 through 2010.
Seventy different offensive stars are eligible for the 11 spots in the all-decade lineup. The list includes seven quarterbacks (choosing one), nine running backs (choosing one), 21 wide receivers (choosing three), eight tight ends (choosing one) and 25 offensive linemen (choosing five). Additionally, fans will be asked to write in an "Offensive 12th Man" to go along with the 11 "starters". Balloting for the offensive team begins June 9 and continues through June 19.
Defensively, 86 players are listed on the ballot. Fans will be asked to choose just four defensive linemen among 34 candidates, three linebackers among 20 possibilities and four defensive backs among 27 former and current stars. A "Defensive 12th Man" will be named to accompany the 11 position starters. Balloting for the defensive all-star squad begins June 20 and continues through June 30.
We didn't forget special teams players, as fans will be asked to select one placekicker, one punter, one punt returner and one kickoff returner among 27 candidates.
During the month of July, the honorees will be unveiled position-by-position on MURedHawks.
Fans' votes will represent 60 percent of the balloting while media voting will account for 40 percent. Only online votes will count.
To protect the integrity of the balloting, fans may vote only once per registered email address for offensive players and only once per registered email address for defensive players.
