OXFORD, Ohio—Behind a decisive 6-1 score, the Miami University women’s tennis team captured its Mid-American Conference opener, downing the Northern Illinois University Huskies (5-7; 0-2 MAC) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the Hepburn Tennis Courts in Oxford.
Miami (8-4; 1-0 MAC) swept doubles to pick up the first point of the match. Senior Nimisha Mohan and freshman Andreea Badileanu posted an 8-1 win at No. 2, while junior Ramona Costea and senior Christiana Raymond also posted an 8-1 win at No 3 doubles. Juniors Christine Guerrazzi and Alix Thurman notched an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles to complete the sweep.
In singles action, sophomore Ana Rajkovic quickly blanked NIU’s Maria Rozo 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth flight. Badileanu posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Raymond clinched the match for the RedHawks with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Guerrazzi notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, while Costea hammered out a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win at No. 5 singles. Mohan was edged by NIU’s Nelle Youel in a hard-fought battle at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5.
Miami hits the road for a mid-week match against Stetson on Wednesday, March 26 in Sarasota, Fla.
