FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the second time in four weeks, Miami University freshman forward Riley Barber has earned CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Week, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday.
Barber (Livonia, Mich.) continued his stellar play last weekend, helping Miami to a win and a tie and shootout win against Northern Michigan with a four-point weekend on a goal and three assists. In Friday's 5-2 victory, Barber tied a career high with three points, his second career three-point game and fourth multi-point game, as he tallied a goal and two assists. The Washington Capitals prospect had the primary assist on the first goal of the game Friday on the power play as his back-door pass set up the goal. He then scored Miami's second goal of the game, also on the power play, which put Miami up 2-1, a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Barber capped his scoring with the primary assist on Miami's fourth goal.
In Saturday's 2-2 tie, Barber continued to be a terror on the power play as he again had the primary assist on Miami's first goal that tied the game at 1-1 with another back-door pass on a man advantage. He now has a point in three straight games and a point in eight of 10 games this year. Barber fired six shots on the weekend while earning the game's No. 1 star on Friday. He also blocked four shots on the weekend and posted a +1 rating. Barber now leads all freshmen in the NCAA with 14 points, which is also tops among all CCHA players, while his nine assists are tops on the team, as well.
Barber earned his first CCHA Rookie of the Week Oct. 22 after a four-point weekend against Providence. He also earned CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Month and HCA National Rookie of the Month for the month of October. He is not the only RedHawk to win awards from the CCHA this year however, as sophomore forward Blake Coleman was named CCHA Postgame Offensive Player of the Week after opening weekend and sophomore forward Austin Czarnik was tabbed CCHA Player of the Month for October.
Barber and the No. 4 RedHawks are back in action this weekend, hosting CCHA foe Michigan State Friday and Saturday at Steve Cady Arena. Puck drop Friday is at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday's game is at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
