BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Competing in its final meet before the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Miami University women’s track and field team posted two runner-up finishes Friday at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University at Haugh Track & Field Complex. Only six RedHawks took part in the meet while the remainder of the team had the weekend off to rest up for the league championships.

Redshirt senior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) earned second in the hammer throw with a season-best heave of 53.56m/175-9. She recorded the throw in the finals while landing all six of her attempts in fair ground. Indiana State’s Felisha Johnson won with a mark of 53.73m/176-3, despite that being the only throw on which she didn’t foul. Gable also placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 42.93m/140-10.

Running the 100m dash for the first time this year, senior Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) crossed in second as she tied her personal best with a time of 11.70 (wind-aided). She already ranked second in school history in the event while the time ties for the fourth-best all-time at Miami. ISU’s Katie Wise won the race in 11.50.

In the 800m run, sophomore Taylor Wickware (Geneva, Ill.)  claimed sixth in 2:14.78. Junior Xerina Hughey (Galloway, Ohio) qualified for the 100m hurdles finals by crossing fifth in the prelims in a season-best 14.37. She finished seventh in the final in 14.39, as the times were her best since her freshman season.

A pair of RedHawks ran in the 1500m invitational run, led by senior Monica Fischer (Cincinnati, Ohio), who finished sixth in a season-best 4:39.45. Sophomore Jess Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) was 11th in 4:52.19.

Miami now turns its attention toward winning a Mid-American Conference championship, as the RedHawks head to the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Akron from May 9-11 at Akron’s Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex.
