AKRON, Ohio – A five-run second inning helped Akron end the Miami University softball team’s five-game Mid-American Conference winning streak as the Zips took an 8-1 victory on Saturday. The RedHawks fall to 8-3 in the MAC and 14-23 overall. Akron improves to 4-7 in the MAC and 17-19 overall.
It started off well for Miami as it scored a run in the top of the first. Taylor Shuey led off with single to left field. Tiyona Marshall moved her up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hailey Reed followed with a double to right center that brought Shuey home and gave the ‘Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Zips quickly tied the score with a run in the bottom of the first off Miami starter Paige Myers. They broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second. The big blow came off the bat of Alissa Birkhimer, a grand slam home run that gave Akron a 6-1 lead. The Zips scored single runs in the third and fourth to secure the 8-1 victory.
Reed finished the game 1-for-3 with one RBI. Shuey, Marshall and Jenna Modic also recorded hits for the RedHawks.
Miami will look to gain a split in the two-game series when it faces Akron on Sunday at 1 p.m.
