OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University women's track and field team opens its 2012-13 indoor season Saturday at the Mastodon Opener, hosted by IPFW at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

The meet begins at 11 a.m. with the weight throw, long jump and pole vault while the first track event is the distance medley relay at noon. The meet then concludes with the 4x400m relay. A complete schedule can be found here.

Miami's first meet of the year will give 16 freshmen their first collegiate track competition and also give the RedHawks a chance to see where they stand before taking over a month off for winter break.

Miami, which finished fifth at the Indoor Mid-American Conference Championships last year, returns several All-MAC performers from a season ago, led by senior Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who is a two-time Second-Team All-MAC performer indoors in the 60m hurdles and a two-time First-Team All-MAC performer and MAC champion outdoors in the 100m hurdles. Redshirt junior Ashley Zaper (Whitehouse, Ohio) also returns after earning Second-Team All-MAC outdoors last year in the heptathlon.

Sophomore Charlotte Myers (Bexley, Ohio) and senior Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) look to have breakout seasons on the track after helping set the indoor school record in the 4x400m relay a year ago. Both rank on Miami's all-time top-10 list in the 400m dash indoors.

In the throws events, Miami will be very strong as redshirt senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio), a four-time Second-Team All-MAC performer in the shot put, returns for her final season. She holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the shot put. Classmate Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) also returns after redshirting last season for an internship. Gable ranks in Miami's all-time top five indoors in both the shot put and weight throw. Junior Tori Paterra (Elizabeth, Pa.) is coming off an All-American season outdoors in the javelin last year, as well.

Junior Kori Tatman (Amanda, Ohio), who ranks second in indoor school history in the pole vault, looks to improve upon her strong showing as a sophomore. Classmate Erica Mudd (Cincinnati, Ohio) is also poised for a big season after performing well in the pentathlon last year. She won the MAC indoor championship in the high jump as a freshman, as well.

At last year's Mastodon Opener, which did not have team scoring, Miami won 10 events, including Baggett in the 60m hurdles and Scannell in the 600m run. Sophomore Taylor Wickware (Geneva, Ill.) claimed the 800m run, where she ranks fifth in school history indoors. Myers helped the RedHawks win the 4x400m relay. Roberts won the shot put, Mudd claimed the high jump and Tatman was second in the pole vault a season ago, as well.

Following the meet, the RedHawks are off for winter break and return to action Jan. 18, 2013 at the Gladstein Invitational, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
