GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami University senior Jarrod Eick and freshman Peter Stefanski had strong showings at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds Saturday, but not quite enough to make the NCAA Championships, as the duo was the final members of the men’s track and field team to compete this season. A record seven RedHawks took part in the East Prelims over the weekend, which were held at North Carolina A&T State University’s Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium.

Eick (Hartville, Ohio) placed 20th in the 1500m quarterfinals in his final race as a RedHawk, as he clocked 3:51.58. He qualified for the quarterfinals Thursday by recording a personal-best time of 3:44.12, which was the sixth-fastest time in the first round though he was seeded 21st due to automatic qualifiers in slower heats. He was originally seeded 36th (out of 48) entering the first round, as he improved 16 spots on the weekend. Last year, Eick placed 37th in the NCAA 1500m first round. The 2013 Mid-American Conference champion in the 1500m was the lone MAC runner in this year’s quarterfinals, however only the top five from each of the two quarterfinal heats and the two next best times advanced to the NCAA Championships. Notre Dame’s Jeremy Rae posted the top quarterfinal time among the 12 qualifiers in 3:39.92.

Stefanski (Aurora, Ill.), who entered the East Prelims seeded 40th in the high jump with a clearance of 2.10m/6-10.75, matched his qualifying height in the first round. He failed to clear the bar just once en route to topping 2.10m, which tied him for 20th in the 48-man field, improving on his seed by 20 places. He tied for ninth out of 24 in his flight (the first of two), while the top 12 finishers between the two flights advanced to the NCAA Championships. Among the four MAC high jumpers at the East Prelims, Stefanski was the top finisher, while four jumpers tied for first overall, topping 2.17m/7-1.5 on their first attempt. All NCAA Championships qualifiers cleared at least 2.14m/7-0.25.

With all seven RedHawks having completed competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, Miami’s 2013 season is now complete.
