ALLENDALE, Mich. - Senior Layne Baggett set a school record and freshman Megan Beaver was victorious on the track to highlight the Miami University women's track and field team's showing Friday at the GVSU Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State at the Kelly Family Sports Center. The RedHawks' throwers, however, competed separately at the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Friday, hosted by Indiana University at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The GVSU Big Meet featured over 50 teams, including multiple nationally ranked teams in both Division I and Division II, as well as seven other Mid-American Conference schools.
Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke the record in the 60m hurdles with her finals time of 8.45, which bested Erin Connolly's mark of 8.46 set in 2003. She was the top qualifier in prelims in 8.51 but was edged out in the final by GVSU's Kalena Franklin, who was second in prelims, as Baggett placed second in the final. Baggett also placed 10th in the 60m dash invitational in 7.72.
In the 600m open run, Beaver (Brecksville, Ohio) won the race in a field of 31 with a personal-best time of 1:35.66, which ties her for ninth in school history. It was her first individual collegiate win. Sophomore Taylor Wickware (Geneva, Ill.) was not far behind in fourth in 1:36.03.
Freshman Kala Allen (East Amherst, N.Y.) took sixth in the 400m dash invitational in 56.55. She also helped Miami's 4x400m relay team place sixth in a season-best 3:48.60, which ranks seventh in school history. Allen ran the relay along with classmate Kathie Wollney (Cary, Ill.) and sophomores Charlotte Myers (Bexley, Ohio) and Gretchen Walter (Piqua, Ohio).
Sophomore Jess Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) placed 18th in her first collegiate 5K in 17:23.53, tops among four RedHawks in a large field of 113 runners. Former RedHawk Rachel Patterson ('11) won the race in 16:17.23, running unattached with the Brooks/Gazelle company.
In the 3000m run invitational, sophomore Elisa Frazier (Williamsville, N.Y.) nabbed 10th, clocking a personal-best 9:57.88. Junior Erin Riley (Avon Lake, Ohio) crossed in 16th in the 800m run invitational in an indoor personal-best 2:15.79.
Among the RedHawks competing at the Hoosier Hills Invitational, redshirt senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) earned runner-up in the shot put with a season-best heave of 15.05m/49-4.5, which is the sixth-best throw in school history, all of which are by Roberts. She finished behind only Indiana's Kyla Buckley (15.63m/51-3.5). In the weight throw, redshirt senior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.), who was eighth in the shot put, placed fifth with a toss of 16.68m/54-8.75.
The RedHawks have one final tune-up before the MAC Championships Feb. 22-23 as Miami competes at the Ball State Quadrangular Friday, Feb. 15 in Muncie, Ind.
