BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After a month and a half between meets, the Miami University women's track and field team showed few signs of rust, posting multiple personal bests and top-10 marks on day one of the Gladstein Invitational, hosted by Indiana University at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Redshirt junior Ashley Zaper (Whitehouse, Ohio) earned runner-up in the pentathlon out of eight competitors, totaling 3,521 points, finishing behind only Indiana's Courtney Woodard. Zaper was first in the high jump portion of the pentathlon, clearing 1.68m/5-6, while she was third in the 60m hurdles (9.02) and the 800m run (2:35.02).
Senior Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the top qualifier for Saturday's final in the prelims of the 60m hurdles, crossing in a season-best 8.51, which is the fourth-best time in school history. She also qualified for Saturday's 60m dash final with a time of 7.71, which ties her personal best and placed her eighth in qualifying. Freshman Kala Allen (East Amherst, N.Y.) also advanced to the 60m dash final, clocking 7.85 to finish 14th. Allen took third in the finals of the 400m dash in 57.22, as well.
In the mile run invitational, senior Monica Fischer (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed sixth in 5:03.33 while sophomore Jess Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) was right behind in seventh in a personal-best 5:03.85. In the regular mile run final, freshman Laura Bess (Brownsburg, Ind.) took fifth in 5:04.64.
Sophomore Melissa Girgis (Worthington, Ohio) finished ninth in the 3000m run invitational in a personal-best 9:56.37, which moves her into Miami's all-time top 10. In the 5000m run, classmate Anna Lamb (Granville, Ohio) crossed in fifth in a personal-best 17:23.15, which ranks her eighth in school history.Redshirt senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) placed fifth in the shot put with a season-best heave of 14.72m/48-3.5.
Sophomore Taylor Brown (Hilliard, Ohio) cleared an indoor personal-best 3.50m/11-5.75 to tie for eighth in the pole vault, while her height also ranks her tied for eighth in school history. Freshman Jess Baker (Aurora, Ohio) cleared 1.58m/5-2.25 to tie for ninth in the high jump.
The Gladstein Invitational resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. with the weight throw and long jump as well as the first event on the track, the 200m dash. The meet concludes at 2:45 p.m. with the 4x400m relay. Live results for Saturday's action are available here.
