OXFORD, Ohio - After both posted strong individual performances at their respective meets over the weekend, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Feb. 4-10 are senior sprinter/hurdler Layne Baggett for the women and sophomore swimmer Joe Baumgartner on the men's side.
Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a stellar meet Friday at the GVSU Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State, as she broke the school record in the 60m hurdles. She clocked a time of 8.45 seconds in the 60m hurdles final, which bested Erin Connolly's mark of 8.46 set in 2003. Baggett finished second in the finals after qualifying first in a field of 32 in the prelims with a time of 8.51, which still ties for the sixth-fastest time in school history, five of which Baggett owns. She was edged out in the 60m hurdles final by GVSU's Kalena Franklin, who was second in prelims. Baggett's school-record time ranks third in the MAC this year and ties for 48th nationally. She was running against hurdlers from several MAC schools as well as Michigan State and Indiana State, both of which are nationally ranked, and several nationally ranked Division II schools, including No. 1 GVSU. Baggett finished 10th in the 60m dash, as well, in 7.72 seconds, one one-hundredth of a second shy of her personal best.
Baumgartner (St. Louis, Mo.) had first-place finishes in each of the three races he swam Saturday in the RedHawks' 149-118 dual-meet victory over Ball State. The sophomore recorded a winning time of 21.32 in the 50 freestyle, then followed that up with a victory in the 100 free (47.01). Baumgartner was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that touched first in 1:26.20. Miami finished the dual meet portion of its season with a 4-4-1 overall mark and 2-2 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) duals.
The Miami Athlete of the Week honor is the first of both Baggett's and Baumgartner's career. They are each the second individual from their respective teams to win the award this year, as well, with Baggett being the second straight track athlete to garner the accolade.
Baggett and the rest of the women's track and field team are back in action Friday at the Ball State Quadrangular in Muncie, Ind. Baumgartner and the men's swimming team is off for a month until returning to the pool March 7-9 for the MAC Championships in Carbondale, Ill., hosted by Southern Illinois.
