OXFORD, Ohio - Behind an impressive season-opening race for the men's cross country team, senior Jarrod Eick was named Miami Male Athlete of the Week, while another strong showing in leading the women's soccer team to a victory earned freshman Haley Walter Miami Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2.
Eick (Hartville, Ohio) repeated as individual champion at the season-opening Flyer 5K Challenge Saturday, winning the University of Dayton-hosted meet for the second straight year. He won the meet in 15:19.7, besting his winning time from 2011 by four seconds. Eick finished three seconds ahead of his teammate and six seconds ahead of anyone else in the field of 87 runners. His fourth career individual title helped the RedHawks to a second-place team finish behind Ohio State but ahead of the host Flyers and Wright State among other Division II and NAIA schools while a total of seven schools ran at the meet.
Eick is the first Miami Male Athlete of the Week for 2012-13 as no male sports competed last week. The honor is the fourth of his career, winning it twice for cross country last year and once in track.
For the second straight weekend, Walter (Cincinnati, Ohio) was instrumental in a Miami comeback victory. In Miami's only game of the week Sunday at Belmont, Walter had a hand in both goals in the 2-1 win over the Bruins with a goal and an assist in 81 minutes of action. Down 1-0 in the second half, Walter snuck behind the defense to receive a through ball and slotted it past the keeper to tie the game in the 67th minute. The match went to overtime and less than three minutes into the extra session, Walter deflected a throw-in that led to the game-winning goal in the pouring rain. She now has three goals in her last two games after breaking a 2-2 tie last Sunday, Aug. 26 at Milwaukee with the first two goals of her career to give the 'Hawks the 4-2 win.
The award is the first such honor of Walter's young career.
Eick and the men's cross country team are back in action in two weeks, running Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. Walter and the RedHawks return to the pitch this Friday, hosting Austin Peay at 5 p.m. at Miami Soccer Field.
