YPSILANTI, Mich. - Sophomore sprint freestyler Joe Baumgartner swam to a first-place time of 45.97 in the 100 free, but it wasn't enough as host Eastern Michigan topped Miami by a score of 184-110 Saturday afternoon. It was EMU's 63rd consecutive victory in Mid-American Conference dual meets.
Baumgartner also placed second in the 50 free (21.28) and scored points as a member of the RedHawks' 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay squads.
Other top placers for Miami included Alex Reinhardt (2nd, 9:43.48) and Sean Minderlein (3rd, 9:51.23) in the 1000 freestyle, Evan Bader (2nd, 57.92) and Anderson Whipp (3rd, 58.22) in the 100 breaststroke, Davis Staley (2nd, 1:54.66) and Ian Joyce (3rd, 1:55.61) in the 200 backstroke, Bader (2nd, season-best time of 2:08.22) in the 200 breast, and Andy Kilkenny (2nd, 1:56.54) and Whipp (3rd, 1:59.08) in the 200 individual medley.
Sean Neri had season-best times in the 500 free (4:44.01) and the 100 backstroke (52.73), while Sam Crockett had his best swim of the season in the 200 IM (1:59.51).
Other point contributors included Chris Dieter in the 200 free, Mike Cavanaugh in the 200 fly, Mike Grainger and Cole Fryman in the one- and three-meter diving events, Mike Kline in the 200 back, and Mike Heavilon in the 100 fly.
Miami's dual meet record fell to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in MAC matches. Eastern Michigan improved its season mark to 5-2 overall, 3-0 in the MAC.
Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawk team hosts Ball State next Saturday (Feb. 9) at the Nixon Aquatic Center. It will be Senior Day. The action begins at 10 a.m.
