OXFORD, Ohio -- Swimmers from Miami University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will have some fun competing against each other this Saturday in the Red and White Intrasquad meet before diving into their 2012-2013 seasons.

The meet will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center inside the Recreation Center. There is no admission charge.

The women's team has a good balance of experience and fresh talent this year, returning 13 seniors and bringing in 10 freshmen.

After placing third at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships last year, Head Coach Dave Jennings is ready to challenge for a MAC title. However, he is eager to get his team competing this Saturday in the Red and White Intrasquad meet.

"It gives us an opportunity to get them on the blocks in a competitive situation, maybe not so much to see where they're at, but at least to get them up and racing."

Jennings looks forward to seeing how the freshmen perform this weekend. He believes the 10 swimmers offer a lot of depth to the team, and fill a lot of the needs from last year's graduating class.

Despite a fifth-place finish at the MAC Championships last season, Head Coach Pete Lindsay is seeing a lot of racing and competitiveness from his men's team, particularly from his six freshmen.

Freshman Jacob Prodoehl, a graduate from Arrowhead High School in Milwaukee, Wisc., swam his way to a 2012 state championship in the 100 freestyle. Rookie teammate Davis Staley earned his own state title in 2011 in the 100 backstroke.

"We've got guys who are used to being in a championship mode and used to winning," Lindsay said. "I've seen it in practice. They're battling against each other."

While swimmers from both teams will be able to battle each other this weekend, Jennings and Lindsay will be able to gauge where their teams are at before the real racing begins just a couple of weeks.

Jennings and his team will travel to Purdue Oct. 19 to compete against the Boilermakers. The women's team will return home Oct. 20 and join Lindsay and the men's team in a home meet against Xavier.
