OXFORD, Ohio - Closing out the 2012 calendar year with a strong performance, ice hockey freshman goaltender Jay Williams has earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Dec. 24-30. Williams is the lone honoree this week as no female sports competed over the holidays.

Williams (McLean, Va.) led Miami to a victory in the semifinals of the inaugural Three Rivers Classic Friday night in Pittsburgh, backstopping the RedHawks to a 1-0 win over rival Ohio State in the third straight meeting between the teams. He stopped all 29 shots he faced for his second career shutout. The rookie kept Miami in the game during the first two periods, as he made 23 of his 29 stops in the first 40 minutes, while the RedHawks mustered just 12 shots. Williams also helped Miami go 2-for-2 on the penalty kill, stopping five shots while a man down. He turned away a pair of breakaways in the first two periods as well, allowing Miami to score the game-winner in the third period.

Williams is now unbeaten in his last nine starts (6-0-3), not allowing more than two goals in any of those games. With the whitewash, his GAA dropped from 2.05 to 1.91, which is 14th nationally.

The Miami Male Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Williams' career.

The hockey team is off this weekend but Williams and the RedHawks return to the ice next weekend, Jan. 11-12, at CCHA foe Northern Michigan.
