DAYTON, Ohio--Miami University's women's cross country team placed second at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge on Saturday morning in the season-opening race for the RedHawks.
Dayton won the meet with 19 points. Miami tallied 46 points and was followed by IUPUI (79) in third place, Cleveland State (131) in fourth place, Wright State (135) in fifth place and Morehead State (140) in sixth place.
Among the Division I field, freshman Jess Hoover placed fourth in a time of 18:55.9 to lead the RedHawks. Freshman Alex Chitwood placed eighth in 19:14.4 and was followed by freshman Mattie Moncayo in ninth place in a time of 19:16.2. Freshman Sammi Vaughan placed 11th, clocking a time of 19:26.8, and redshirt freshman Melissa Girgis rounded out Miami's top five, placing 14th in a time of 19:41.7.
"They ran great," said Miami head coach Kelly Phillips. "They raced really hard in some tough conditions. Times for the top finishers in the race were about a minute and 20 seconds slower than last year's top finishers because of the heat."
The RedHawks, who had won this meet each of the last four years, did not run four of their top runners to rest them for next weekend's home meet and battled extremely hot temperatures throughout the race.
Miami returns to action next weekend when the RedHawks host the Miami Open at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 on Miami's Western Campus course.
