MUNCIE, Ind. - A pair of RedHawks garnered Second-Team All-Mid-American Conference honors to lead the Miami University women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the 6K MAC Championship Saturday morning at Muncie Elks Country Club, hosted by Ball State.
The RedHawks totaled 83 points to equal their finish at last year's MAC Championship while Toledo repeated as the champion with 33 points. Central Michigan was the runner-up with 73 points, 10 better than Miami. Ohio finished fourth with 86 points, led by individual champion Juli Accurso, while Eastern Michigan rounded out the top five with 89 points in the 12-team field.
Senior Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) led Miami for the third time this season, placing eighth in 21:20.4 to earn Second-Team All-MAC honors for the third straight year, with her eighth-place finish a career-best at the league meet. Freshman Jess Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) also picked up Second-Team All-MAC accolades by finishing 12th in 21:34.1.
Fellow freshman Alex Chitwood (Carmel, Ind.) crossed in 19th in a season-best 21:50.4 while redshirt junior Jillian Dickman (Madison, Ohio) was just a half a second behind in 20th as Miami's fourth scorer. Senior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio), a Second-Team All-MAC performer last year, rounded out Miami's scoring five in 24th in 21:58.1.
"We didn't want it bad enough," a disappointed head coach Kelly Phillips said. "It wasn't that we couldn't have won. It was doable. We just chose not to. You have to want it to win it."
Sophomore Kate Carter (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished 25th, just two-tenths of a second behind Miller in 21:58.3 while redshirt sophomore Monica Fischer (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed 31st in a 6K personal-best 22:13.6.
The RedHawks look to qualify for the NCAA Championship at their next meet on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they run at the Great Lakes Regional Championship in Toledo, Ohio.
